Unique Internship Experience
July 3, 2014
During this summer, Matt Lastrapes, a sophomore from Duke University pursuing a career in Biomedical Engineering, had the opportunity to intern in the Medical Bridges Biomedical Test Room. The internship was a continuing learning experience for Matt that allowed him not only to work hands-on with many medical devices and receive professional training but also to be part of Medical Bridges’ mission and the impact it has around the globe.

Matt came with almost no background in electronics or medical devices, but as he worked together with our biomedical technicians, Irma Martinez and Lauren Smith, he started to see similarities between devices and learned how to troubleshoot and repair a variety of equipment. Irma and Lauren taught Matt “the ropes” and explained logistical processes and how to properly test every piece of donated equipment that comes through the Medical Bridges Biomedical Test Room. All tested equipment is later placed on one of many ocean-freight container shipments and sent to an underserved community abroad.

When we asked Matt if he would recommend Medical Bridges to other potential interns, here is what he replied: “Yes, my time here was much more valuable than any class I have taken so far, and more enjoyable. The work was fun and taught me more than I could’ve asked for. The impact of my time here has added a whole new aspect to the value of the organization. The experience and knowledge from Medical Bridges will be with me through my entire career.”

Matt recently left to a summer study program in London. We miss him and wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors.
